What Documents Do You Need to Buy a Car in Texas? (2026 Checklist)

The short answer

To buy a car from a Texas dealership, bring these five things and you can usually drive home the same day:

  • A valid driver's license (or other government photo ID, if someone else is driving it home)
  • Proof of auto insurance, or your insurance company's number so you can add the new car before you leave
  • Your down payment: debit card, cashier's check, or whatever form the dealership accepts (ask first)
  • If you're financing: recent pay stubs and a recent bill or lease showing your current address
  • If you're trading in: the title (or your lender's name and account number if it's still financed), your registration, and every key and remote

That's the whole list for most people. The rest of this guide covers the details: what changes if you pay cash, finance, trade in, or buy with a co-signer, and what the dealership handles for you so you don't have to.

I'm Steven Wilson, Sales and Social Media & Marketing Manager at Kramer Autoplex in Livingston, and I help buyers across Houston and East Texas. Missing paperwork is the number-one reason a deal that should take an afternoon turns into two trips. This checklist is how you avoid that.

The Texas car-buying checklist

Everyone needs

  • Driver's license or photo ID. The dealership has to verify who you are, and lenders need it for financing. You also can't legally drive the car off the lot without a valid license. If you're buying for someone else or don't drive, bring your ID and a licensed driver.
  • Proof of insurance. Texas requires liability coverage of at least 30/60/25: $30,000 per injured person, $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. Most insurers let you add a new vehicle with a phone call or in the app. Do it before you sign so there's no gap. If you're financing, the lender will usually also require comprehensive and collision coverage.
  • Your payment method for the down payment or the full price. Many dealerships limit how much you can put on a credit card, so check before you plan on it.

If you're financing through the dealership

Lenders need to confirm you can make the payment. Expect to be asked for:

  • Proof of income: your most recent pay stubs. If you're self-employed, paid in cash, or on a fixed income, bring bank statements, tax returns, or benefit award letters instead.
  • Proof of residence: a recent utility bill, lease, or bank statement with your name and current address.
  • References: some lenders ask for a few personal references with phone numbers. Not every file needs them, and I'll tell you ahead of time if yours does.

You don't need a perfect credit score to start. Here's how that side works: Can You Get a Car With Bad Credit in Houston? and What If I Have No Credit History at All?

If you have your own financing

Bring your pre-approval letter or check from your bank or credit union, plus the loan officer's contact information. The dealership may need to confirm the details with them before you take delivery.

If you're paying cash

You won't need income or residence documents. Just bring your ID, insurance, and payment. For larger amounts, a cashier's check or wire is normal. Call ahead so the dealership knows what it'll receive.

If you're trading in a vehicle

  • The title, if you own it outright. It has to be signed by everyone listed on it.
  • If there's still a loan: your lender's name, your account number, and ideally a 10-day payoff quote. The dealership pays off the loan and gets the title from the lender.
  • Current registration.
  • All keys, fobs, and remotes. A missing key can cost you on the appraisal.

Your trade-in also saves you money on tax in Texas. More on that below.

If you're buying with a co-signer

The co-signer needs to be there, or be reachable to sign, with their own ID, proof of income, and proof of residence. They're applying for the loan too, so the lender verifies them the same way it verifies you.

What the dealership handles for you

This is where Texas is easier than people expect. When you buy from a licensed Texas dealer, you don't have to go to the county tax office.

  • Title and registration. Texas requires a vehicle to be titled in the buyer's name within 30 days of the sale, and when you buy from a dealer, the dealer files the title application for you (Form 130-U, the Application for Texas Title and/or Registration).
  • Sales tax. Texas charges 6.25% motor vehicle sales tax, and at a dealership it's figured on the sales price minus your trade-in allowance. The dealer collects it in the deal, so there's no separate trip to pay it. Full breakdown: Texas Car Tax, Title & Registration Fees Explained.
  • License plates. Since July 1, 2025, Texas dealers no longer hand out paper temporary tags. Under House Bill 718, you get metal license plates at delivery. Keep your Buyer's Receipt in the car until your registration sticker arrives and is on the windshield. If you're trading in a car with specialty plates, you keep those.
  • Inspection. Texas ended safety inspections for non-commercial vehicles on January 1, 2025. You pay an inspection program replacement fee at registration instead. If you'll register in a county that still requires emissions testing, such as Harris or Montgomery, that test still applies at renewal.

Two Texas facts that surprise people

Your trade-in lowers your sales tax. Say you buy a $30,000 vehicle and trade in a car worth $10,000. You pay the 6.25% tax on $20,000 ($1,250) instead of on $30,000 ($1,875). That's $625 back in your pocket just from trading in. If you're deciding whether to sell privately instead, count that number: Trade-In or Sell Outright: Which Actually Nets You More?

There's no 3-day cooling-off period. Texas law doesn't give you a general right to cancel a car purchase from a dealership after you sign. Read the contract, ask your questions, and make sure the numbers are the ones you agreed to before you sign. A good salesperson will slow down for that. If one won't, that tells you something.

Buying without coming in first

You don't have to bring a folder of paperwork to find out where you stand. The first step on this site is just your name and a phone number or email. It takes about twenty seconds and doesn't run a credit check. I'll tell you exactly which documents your situation needs, and most of them can be sent as photos. With free delivery anywhere in Texas, some buyers only meet me when the car shows up. See Can I Buy a Car Online Without Coming to the Dealership?

Frequently asked questions

What documents do I need to buy a car in Texas?

A valid driver's license or photo ID, proof of insurance, and your payment. If you're financing, add recent pay stubs and a recent bill or lease showing your address. If you're trading in, bring the title or your loan payoff details, registration, and all keys.

Do I need insurance before I buy a car in Texas?

You need it before you drive the car. Texas requires at least 30/60/25 liability coverage, and lenders usually require full coverage on a financed vehicle. Most people add the new car with a quick call to their insurer before signing.

Do I need proof of income to buy a car?

Only if you're financing. Lenders use pay stubs, bank statements, tax returns or benefit letters to confirm you can make the payment. Cash buyers don't need income documents.

Do Texas dealers still give paper temporary tags?

No. Since July 1, 2025, Texas dealers issue metal license plates at delivery instead of paper tags. Keep your Buyer's Receipt in the vehicle until the registration sticker arrives.

Who files the title when I buy from a dealer in Texas?

The dealer. Texas requires the vehicle to be titled in your name within 30 days, and when you buy from a dealership, the dealer files the title application for you, so you don't need to visit the county tax office.

Can I return a car in Texas within 3 days?

Generally no. Texas has no automatic cooling-off period for car purchases made at a dealership, so review everything before you sign.

How much is sales tax on a car in Texas?

6.25% of the sales price, minus any trade-in allowance when you buy from a dealer. Registration, title and local fees are separate.
