Texas Car Tax, Title & Registration Fees Explained (2026)
The short answer
When you buy a car from a Texas dealership, expect these on top of the price:
- Sales tax: 6.25% of the sales price, minus your trade-in allowance
- Title application fee: $28 or $33, depending on your county
- Registration: a $50.75 base fee for a passenger car or light truck, plus local county fees of $0 to $31.50, a $4.75 processing and handling fee, and an inspection program replacement fee
- A documentary fee charged by the dealer. Texas presumes up to $225 is reasonable.
On a $30,000 vehicle with no trade-in, that usually comes to about $1,970 to $2,230 in total. Almost all of it is the sales tax.

Sales tax: the big one
Texas charges a 6.25% motor vehicle sales tax. At a dealership it's figured on the sales price minus any trade-in allowance.
- $30,000 vehicle, no trade: $1,875
- $30,000 vehicle, $10,000 trade: tax on $20,000 = $1,250
Two things people get wrong:
- Cash down doesn't lower the tax. Only a trade-in reduces the taxable amount. $5,000 cash down still leaves you paying tax on the full price.
- Moving to Texas with a car you already own costs a flat $90 new resident tax instead of the full use tax, as long as it was registered in your name in the other state.
Buying from a private seller works differently. The tax can be based on the vehicle's standard presumptive value, and you pay it at the county tax office within 30 days. At a dealership, the tax is collected in the deal.
Title and registration
When you buy from a Texas dealer, the dealer files your title and registration, so you don't visit the tax office. Here's what those cost:
- Title application: $28 or $33, depending on the county
- Base registration: $50.75 for passenger cars and light trucks. Pickups rated 6,001–10,000 lbs are $54.
- Local fees: $0 to $31.50 depending on your county, for road and bridge, transportation projects and child safety programs
- Processing and handling: $4.75
- Inspection program replacement fee: Texas ended safety inspections for non-commercial vehicles on January 1, 2025, but kept a fee in their place. It's $7.50 a year, or $16.75 on a brand-new vehicle's initial two-year registration.
- Electric vehicles pay an extra $200 a year, or $400 on a new EV's initial two-year registration.
If you register in a county that still requires emissions testing, such as Harris or Montgomery, you'll need that test at renewal.
Since July 1, 2025, you also drive away with metal license plates from the dealer instead of paper tags.
The documentary fee
Dealers charge a documentary fee to cover preparing the paperwork. In Texas it's regulated: the Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner treats $225 or less as presumed reasonable, and a dealer who wants to charge more has to file a cost analysis with the state first.
Ask for the doc fee in writing up front. It should be the same for every buyer at that dealership.
What "out the door" should mean
The out-the-door price is the vehicle price plus everything above. When you compare deals, compare out-the-door numbers, not monthly payments. A lower payment can hide a longer term, a higher price, or add-on products rolled into the loan.
My payment pages build estimates with Texas sales tax and title and registration fees already included, so the number isn't a teaser. See cars under $400 a month or cars under $500 a month.
Worked example
A $30,000 used SUV, registered in a county with no local fees and no emissions testing, no trade-in:
- Sales tax (6.25%): $1,875.00
- Title application: $28.00
- Base registration: $50.75
- Processing and handling: $4.75
- Inspection program replacement fee: $7.50
- Documentary fee (at the $225 presumed-reasonable limit): $225.00
- Total on top of the price: $2,191.00
Add a $10,000 trade-in and the tax drops by $625. Everything else stays the same.
Frequently asked questions
How much are tax, title and license on a car in Texas?
Sales tax is 6.25% of the price minus any trade-in. Title is $28 or $33, and registration is a $50.75 base fee plus up to $31.50 in local fees, a $4.75 processing fee and an inspection program replacement fee. On a $30,000 purchase the total is typically around $2,000 to $2,200, including a dealer documentary fee.
Does a down payment reduce sales tax in Texas?
No. Only a trade-in reduces the taxable amount at a Texas dealership. Cash down lowers what you finance but not the tax.
Do I still need a car inspection in Texas?
Not a safety inspection. Texas ended those for non-commercial vehicles on January 1, 2025, and replaced them with a fee paid at registration. Emissions testing is still required in certain counties, including Harris and Montgomery.
What is the maximum doc fee in Texas?
Texas presumes a documentary fee of $225 or less is reasonable. A dealer can charge more only after submitting a cost analysis to the Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner.
How much is the new resident tax in Texas?
$90, in place of the full use tax, for a vehicle you bring to Texas that was already registered in your name in another state or country.
