Shop Auto Loans in 14–45 Days: Credit Inquiries
The short answer
If you're financing a car in Houston or East Texas, you can compare multiple lenders without treating every credit pull like a separate hit. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says shopping for an auto loan will generally have little to no impact on your credit scores, and that lender inquiries usually count as one inquiry when they happen within 14 to 45 days of each other. That is one of the most useful — and most misunderstood — rules in auto financing. Use the window to compare APR, term, and amount financed; don't stretch applications over months.
What the CFPB says
From How will shopping for an auto loan affect my credit?:
- Shopping for the best auto loan deal will generally have little to no impact on your credit score(s).
- The benefit of shopping far outweighs any impact on your credit.
- Lender inquiries generally count as a single inquiry if made within 14 to 45 days of each other.
- Shopping for two different loan types (for example, mortgage and auto) counts as two inquiries.
- Applying for multiple loans over a long period can impact scores more.
CFPB tips: check your reports for errors first, get preapprovals before you shop vehicles, and keep auto-loan shopping inside that 14-to-45-day span.
Compare the deal, not just the approval
Easier access to credit does not mean every approval is a good deal. The CFPB's compare auto loan offers page tells you to look at loan amount, APR and interest rate, length of loan, and monthly payment. Their sample $20,000 loan at 4.75% shows roughly $1,498 in interest over three years versus about $3,024 over six years — more than double the interest for the longer term.
When you line up offers inside the shopping window:
1. Write down APR, not only interest rate.
2. Write down months.
3. Write down amount financed (price minus down payment/trade, plus fees and add-ons).
4. Add insurance to your monthly budget before you commit.
5. Ask which products are optional and get each price in writing.

A Houston buyer's shopping calendar
- Week 0: Pull credit reports, dispute errors, list income and debts.
- Weeks 1–2: Collect preapprovals from lenders that fit your situation (good credit, damaged credit, thin credit, or no credit). Keep them inside one 14-to-45-day window.
- After you have numbers: Shop inventory that fits the payment and the total cost — including free delivery anywhere in Texas when that helps, or nationwide delivery outside Texas.
- At the desk: Compare any dealer-arranged offer to your best preapproval using the same four fields above.
Same-day answers on where you stand — what you qualify for and the monthly — are typical when you start with name and phone or email. That first step takes about 20 seconds and does not include a credit check yet. A full application with a credit check comes later. None of that is a guarantee of approval or a specific payment.
What not to do
- Don't apply once in June, again in August, and again in October and expect every pull to collapse into one inquiry.
- Don't mix a mortgage shopping spree and an auto shopping spree and assume they share a window — the CFPB says different loan types count separately.
- Don't chase the lowest payment by stretching term if the total interest doubles.
September's broader credit-access data (more approvals, including more subprime) was encouraging, but structure still matters — see auto credit access at an 11-year high.
How I can help
I help people in Houston and East Texas get financed with good credit, bad credit, thin credit, or no credit. I shop each application across a wide lender network, including lenders that work with damaged or limited credit. Live lot inventory is on the site — I won't invent stock or prices here. Free delivery is available anywhere in Texas, and nationwide delivery is available outside Texas.
Bottom line
The CFPB's 14-to-45-day auto-loan shopping window is built for comparison, not for fear. Cluster your applications, compare APR and term, and only then pick a car and a contract that fit the full cost of ownership.
