Cox Automotive New-Vehicle Inventory, August 2026: 73 Days' Supply and What It Means in Texas

August new inventory tightened—what that means for Texas buyers

Cox Automotive’s August 2026 new-vehicle inventory report (published Sept. 10) shows available U.S. new inventory at 2.68 million units—down 1.6% from July—and 73 days’ supply, the lowest since April 2025 (July was an upwardly revised 77). The average new listing price rose to $49,486 (+0.6% MoM, +1.9% YoY). Vehicles priced at $30,000 or less carried about 54 days of supply; units above $60,000 sat beyond 90 days. Model-year 2027 vehicles were 12.4% of available inventory at month-end—up from 5.6% in July, but still well behind last year’s faster next-model-year rollout.

If you are shopping in Houston or East Texas, that headline is easy to misread. Tighter affordable new supply does not automatically mean every used asking price drops—or that your monthly payment improves without a real application.

Inventory charts are not your payment quote

Retail inventory is what dealers have on the ground. Asking price is what you see on the window. Financing is what lenders offer based on your credit file, income, down payment, term, and the specific vehicle. Those layers move on different clocks.

Cox also notes brand-level days’ supply varies widely (for example, Toyota near 33 days and Honda near 41 at month-end, with other brands much higher). The lot you visit can look nothing like the national average—another reason not to treat one chart as your personal discount.

When the affordable band is the scarcest, some shoppers stretch term or roll negative equity to “make the payment fit.” Ask what the full structure is before you fall in love with a monthly number.

Practical steps that help more than waiting

1. Know what you can document. Income, housing cost, and any existing auto or personal loan balances matter more than a national days’-supply print.

2. Shop the payment structure, not just the sticker. Term length and negative equity on a trade can hide risk inside a comfortable-looking payment.

3. Compare new vs used honestly. A constrained under-$30k new band can push you toward used—or toward a higher-priced new unit with more incentives. Neither path replaces a standing conversation.

4. Start soft. On StevenSellsCars, the first step is name plus phone or email (~20 seconds) with no credit check yet. The full application—which does involve a credit check—comes after.

Same-day standing answers are typical once the fuller conversation is underway—not a guarantee of approval and not a promised APR.

How Steven / Kramer can help (soft, accurate)

Steven Wilson works at Kramer Autoplex and helps people in Houston and East Texas get financed with good credit, bad credit, thin credit, or no credit by shopping a wide lender network. Free delivery is available anywhere in Texas; nationwide delivery is available outside Texas. Live inventory is listed on the site—this post does not invent stock, prices, lender names, or customer stories.

If tighter August new supply made you feel urgency, use that energy to get clarity on where you stand instead of guessing from inventory charts.

Takeaway: 73 days’ new supply and a tight affordable band are real market context. Your next useful move is still a soft standing conversation—not waiting for national inventory to rewrite your payment.
