Vehicle Affordability Index, August 2026: New-Vehicle Payments Averaged $770

August affordability slipped—national averages are not your payment quote

Cox Automotive’s Auto Market Weekly Summary dated Sept. 21, 2026 reviews August new-vehicle affordability from the Cox Automotive/Moody’s Analytics Vehicle Affordability Index. The typical monthly payment was $770 (+0.5% from July; +2.6% year over year). Median income weeks needed to purchase a new vehicle rose to 35.5 from 35.4 in July (still below 35.9 a year earlier). Average transaction price rose 0.5% month over month—the largest monthly ATP increase in several months—while incentives declined 0.6% from July and 7.3% year over year.

Cox also notes financing costs edging higher: new-vehicle loan rates up about 20 basis points over the past two months, used-vehicle rates up about 10. Those moves may not rewrite every payment overnight, but they can change how comfortable a stretch feels when you are shopping Houston or East Texas inventory.

What that means for Texas buyers (and what it does not)

Industry averages describe the market—not your approval, APR, or monthly. A longer term or a lower down payment can shrink the payment while raising total cost. Rolling negative equity can do the same. None of that is a reason to skip a real standing conversation.

If you still owe money on a trade, TxDMV’s lien release guidance is worth a read: after payoff, the lienholder has 10 days after receipt of payment to release the lien (paper vs electronic paths differ). That is official motorist guidance—not a promise about your lender’s timeline beyond that window.

A calm first step

He helps people in Houston and East Texas explore financing with good credit, bad credit, thin credit, or no credit by shopping applications across a wide lender network—without inventing lender names, counts, or approval rates here. A same-day answer on where you stand is typical, not guaranteed. The first step is name plus phone or email (~20 seconds) with no credit check yet; the full application (which does involve a credit check) comes later. Free delivery is available anywhere in Texas; nationwide delivery is available outside Texas. Live inventory is listed on the site—this post does not invent stock, prices, or customer stories.

Takeaway: Use August’s $770 typical payment as context, then get a standing check on your file instead of guessing from national averages.
