Get an Independent Inspection Before You Buy a Used Car
The short answer
Before you buy a used car from a dealer, the Federal Trade Commission's consumer page on buying a used car from a dealer says a vehicle history report is not a substitute for an independent vehicle inspection. History reports may list accidents or flood damage but typically will not list mechanical problems. The FTC's advice: pay an independent mechanic for a mechanical inspection—even if the car is "certified," dealer-inspected, or sold with a warranty or service contract. For Texas buyers comparing cars and financing, that inspection is one of the cheapest ways to avoid an expensive surprise after you sign.
What the FTC says about inspections
From the FTC used-car dealer guidance (opened for this article):
- Ask to have the car inspected by an independent mechanic before you buy; the Buyers Guide itself points shoppers that way.
- Get a vehicle history report and use ftc.gov/usedcars resources on reports and safety recalls—but do not treat the report as a mechanical clean bill of health.
- A mechanical inspection differs from a safety inspection; safety checks usually focus on whether the car is unsafe to drive.
- If the dealer will not let the car leave the lot, look for a mobile inspector, or ask the dealer to bring the car to a shop you choose.
- If a dealer will not allow an independent inspection, consider another dealer.
- Ask the mechanic for a written report with repair cost estimates, including make, model, and VIN—then use those estimates in price talks.
We covered the Buyers Guide "as is" vs. warranty boxes earlier in FTC Buyers Guide / as-is. Today's focus is the inspection step that sits beside that sticker.
Tie the inspection to the money conversation
The same FTC page warns that low monthly payments can hide longer terms and higher interest, and that you should know the total cost with financing—not only the payment. Pair the mechanic's repair list with:
- An out-the-door price in writing before you visit (FTC financing advice on financing or leasing a car).
- APR, term, and amount financed—not payment alone (see five numbers to check before signing).
- Optional add-ons kept on their own line (what you can negotiate).
If the inspection finds near-term repairs, that belongs in the negotiation before those dollars are buried inside a long payment.
A simple Texas lot checklist
1. Screenshot the listing price and VIN before you drive over.
2. Schedule or bring an independent inspector (or mobile tech) before you sign.
3. Read the Buyers Guide: as-is vs. warranty, and get promises in writing on the Guide.
4. Pull a history report—and still do the mechanical inspection.
5. Compare financing separately from the vehicle price; do not let a soft payment erase repair reality.
6. If the dealer blocks any independent look, walk.
How Steven Sells Cars can help
I'm Steven Wilson, Sales and Social Media & Marketing Manager at Kramer Autoplex in Livingston, TX. I help people across Houston and East Texas get financed with good credit, bad credit, thin credit, or no credit by shopping a wide lender network. Same-day answers on where you stand are typical, not a guarantee of approval. The first step is name plus phone or email—about 20 seconds—and no credit check yet; the full application comes later. Free delivery is available anywhere in Texas, with nationwide delivery outside Texas. Live inventory is listed on the site; I will not invent stock, prices, or customer stories here.
If you want a clear read on financing while you line up an independent inspection on a car you are considering, that sequence is ordinary dealership work—not a shortcut around due diligence. Kramer Autoplex is the store I work from; the inspection should still be someone you choose.
Bottom line
The FTC's advice is blunt: history reports miss mechanical problems, so budget for an independent inspection before you buy. Use the written repair estimate in the price and loan conversation—not after the fact.
