How Much Down Payment Do You Need for a Car in Texas?
The short answer
There's no single required down payment for a car in Texas. It depends on your credit, the vehicle, and the lender. Some buyers with strong credit put $0 down. Buyers rebuilding credit are more often asked for something down, and it can be the difference between a yes and a no.
A common rule of thumb is about 20% on a new vehicle and 10% on a used one. Treat that as a target, not a requirement. What matters more is knowing what each dollar down actually does to your deal.
I'm Steven Wilson, Sales and Social Media & Marketing Manager at Kramer Autoplex in Livingston. I work with every kind of credit, and down payment is one of the first things we talk through, because it changes more than just the payment.
What a down payment actually does
- Lowers the amount you finance, so you pay interest on less.
- Lowers the monthly payment. Roughly $18 to $21 a month for every $1,000 down on a 72-month loan at rates between about 10% and 15%.
- Protects you from being upside down. A new car loses value fastest in the first couple of years. Money down keeps your loan balance closer to what the car is worth, which matters if it's totaled or you want to trade it early.
- Can open doors with lenders. For damaged or limited credit, money down lowers the lender's risk. It can move a file from "no" to "yes", or to a better tier.
What it doesn't do in Texas: lower your sales tax. The 6.25% tax at a dealership is charged on the price minus your trade-in. Cash down doesn't reduce it.
Your trade-in counts
If you're trading in a vehicle, its equity (what it's worth minus what you owe) works like a down payment. It also cuts your sales tax, which cash can't do. A $10,000 trade with no loan on it saves you $625 in Texas sales tax on top of the $10,000.
If you owe more than the trade is worth, that negative equity works against you. Money down can offset it, so you're not carrying the old loan into the new one. More here: Trade-In or Sell Outright in Texas
Can you buy a car with no money down?
Sometimes, yes. It usually depends on:
- Your credit profile. Stronger credit gets more $0-down options.
- The vehicle. Lenders look at the price against the vehicle's value. An overpriced or high-mileage unit is harder to finance at zero down.
- Your income and debts. The payment has to fit what the lender thinks you can carry.
Zero down isn't automatically bad, but it means financing the taxes and fees too, which makes it easier to end up owing more than the car is worth. If you go that route, a shorter term helps.
How much should you put down?
Work backward from the payment you're comfortable with, not forward from the car you like:
- Pick a monthly number that leaves room for insurance, gas and maintenance.
- Choose a term you can live with. Shorter terms cost less overall.
- See how much vehicle that buys, with and without extra money down.
My payment pages do exactly this, with Texas tax and title and registration fees built in and a down payment you can change. Try cars under $400 a month and adjust the down payment to see what moves.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a typical down payment on a car in Texas?
There's no set amount. A common rule of thumb is about 20% on a new vehicle and 10% on a used one, but some buyers with strong credit put nothing down, while buyers rebuilding credit may be asked for more.
Does a down payment lower sales tax in Texas?
No. At a Texas dealership, the 6.25% sales tax is charged on the price minus your trade-in. Cash down lowers the amount you finance, not the tax.
How much does $1,000 down lower a car payment?
On a 72-month loan, roughly $18 to $21 a month for each $1,000 down, at interest rates between about 10% and 15%. The exact amount depends on your rate and term.
Can I use my trade-in as a down payment?
Yes. The equity in your trade (its value minus any loan payoff) works like a down payment, and in Texas it also lowers your sales tax.
Can I get a car with no money down and bad credit?
It's harder but not impossible. It depends on the vehicle, your income and the lender. Money down often improves both the approval odds and the terms when credit is damaged.
