Auto Credit Access at an 11-Year High: What It Means

The short answer

Car loans got a little easier to get in September 2026. Cox Automotive's Dealertrack Credit Availability Index rose for a fifth straight month to 107.1, its highest level since April 2015. The overall loan approval rate rose to 73.9%, and the share of loans going to subprime borrowers rose to 17.4%. That's encouraging if your credit is damaged or thin. The catch is in how deals are being structured: Cox also reported a record 31.8% of loans longer than 72 months, 57.8% of loans carrying negative equity, and average down payments slipping to 12.8%.

What Cox reported for September 2026

From the September 2026 Credit Availability Index report:

  • Index: 107.1, up for the fifth consecutive month; highest since April 2015.
  • Approval rate: 73.9%, up 30 basis points, its highest since August 2025.
  • Subprime share: 17.4%, up 80 basis points from August and 230 basis points from a year earlier.
  • Average contract rate: up 23 basis points to 11.22%.
  • Loans longer than 72 months: 31.8%, a record in the dataset, up 490 basis points from a year earlier.
  • Negative equity share: 57.8%, the highest since April.
  • Down payments: 12.8%, the lowest since September 2022.
  • Credit access improved across every channel and lender type Cox tracks.

These are national figures for loans booked through Dealertrack, not a promise about any one applicant.

What it means if you have bad or thin credit

Our read, for Houston and East Texas buyers:

  • More lenders are saying yes, including to subprime borrowers. If you were turned down earlier this year, it may be worth asking again. We covered that question in already turned down for a car loan?.
  • Rates didn't fall. The average contract rate rose. Easier approval and cheaper money aren't the same thing.
  • Watch the structure. Cox's own takeaway was that longer terms, smaller down payments, and financing above a vehicle's value make a car easier to fit in a budget up front, at the cost of flexibility later: higher total borrowing cost and more time underwater. More on that in long-term auto loans and negative equity on a trade-in.

A short checklist before you apply

1. Know your monthly ceiling, including insurance, before you look at payment quotes.

2. Put something down if you can. Even a modest down payment reduces how much you finance.

3. Ask for the term and APR side by side. A lower payment on a longer term can cost more overall.

4. Bring your trade payoff so negative equity isn't a surprise.

5. Read every number on the contract; see five numbers to check before signing.

Compare the offer, not just the approval

An approval is only useful if the deal is sound. When a lender says yes:

  • Ask for the APR, not just the interest rate.
  • Ask how many months the loan runs.
  • Ask which add-ons are optional, and get the price of each one in writing.
  • Add insurance to your monthly budget before you commit.

If the only way the payment works is a seven-year term with almost nothing down, pause and look at a less expensive vehicle or a larger down payment. Access is better than it was; stretching every approval to the limit is still a bad trade.

How I can help

I help people in Houston and East Texas get financed with good credit, bad credit, thin credit, or no credit. I shop each application across a wide lender network, including lenders that work with damaged or limited credit. Same-day answers on where you stand — what you qualify for and the monthly — are typical, but they're not a guarantee of approval. Free delivery is available anywhere in Texas, and nationwide delivery is available outside Texas.

Bottom line

September's data shows lenders approving more loans, including more subprime loans, than at any point since 2015 on Cox's index. That's a real opening if your credit has kept you on the sidelines. Use it carefully: compare term, APR, and total cost, and avoid stretching a loan just to make a payment fit.
